About the data
- WTI and Brent: daily spot prices (Cushing, OK WTI; Europe Brent) from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The EIA usually publishes weekly, so the latest value can be a few days old.
- WCS: Western Canadian Select at Hardisty, Alberta, assembled from public sources at the best resolution available for each period: daily prices from Alberta Treasury Board and Finance (June 2025 onward, updated weekly); daily prices from Bank of Canada Monetary Policy Report chart data (January 2022 to January 2025); weekly Thursday closes from Alberta's Indicators at a Glance (June 2019 to December 2021, and January to June 2025); and monthly averages from the Alberta Economic Dashboard before June 2019. Alberta's source changed on February 18, 2025, from Kent Group to a price implied from CME and ICE futures, so values on either side are not strictly comparable.
- Indicative WCS: for days after the latest published WCS price, the dotted line estimates WCS as that day's WTI minus the most recent published WTI–WCS differential. It is an estimate, not a published price.
- CAD values: converted with the Bank of Canada USD/CAD rate for each date: the daily average rate from 2017, and the legacy noon rate from May 2007 to 2016. Earlier dates use European Central Bank reference rates via Frankfurter. On weekends and holidays the previous business day's rate is used.
